Overview

An expansion shelf adds drive bays to an existing storage server without adding a second host, which keeps the storage software simple and the cost per bay low. The NVMe variant presents 24 E3.S or U.2 drives to the host over PCIe Gen5 cables, and the JBOD variant presents 24 SAS or SATA drives over 24 Gb/s SAS with cascade ports for several shelves in a chain.

It is used to grow the capacity of the 2U and 4U storage servers, to build a large flash pool behind a single pair of high availability heads, and to give a GPU server a local dataset far larger than its internal bays. Dual I/O modules, dual power supplies and redundant fans keep the shelf serviceable without downtime.

We quote the shelf with the matching host adapter, cables and drives so that it arrives as a working set. Plan for about 0.6 kW per fully populated shelf. The enclosure reports drive and environmental status to the host over SES.

Use cases

  • Growing storage servers
  • Large flash pools behind HA heads
  • Local datasets for GPU servers
  • Backup and archive expansion

Compare it with the next class up or down

The nearest classes we quote are the 2U 24 bay all NVMe storage server and the 4U 36 bay HDD storage server. If neither is quite right, tell us the workload and we specify the system between them.
