| OVERVIEW |

The television industry is currently in the process of changing
from analog to digital technology. MPEG-2 has been universally
adopted as the main standard for video compression. Since
MPEG-2 must be decoded at the same rate it was encoded at
an information layer needs to be added to the MPEG in order
to transmit it to consumers. Standards have been created by
industry to provide for the methodology of packetizing MPEG-2
streams and adding tables via data packets to the video packets
The ATSC standard has been approved by the USA Government
as the standard to accommodate this need for terrestrial digital
television. This product complies with the ATSC specifications
and provides for the ability of computers to capture, process,
and transmit ATSC compliant streams.
THE SMPTE 310M STANDARD
SMPTE 310M defines a method of digitally transmitting MPEG-2
Transport Streams at either 19.38 or 38.8 Mbps and is designed
to be transmitted via 8VSB modulation to the home receiver.
It is usually composed of a 12 Mbps High Definition ( 1080i)
stream and a 6 Mbps Standard Definition stream ( 640i) . This
is the standard that is usually used to feed most brands of
Modulators that actually create the RF signals. Our device
can be used to create Video Servers or test equipment that
is compatible with the ATSC standard.
Clock Issues: The SMPTE 310M standard specifies a very accurate
2.5 ppm clock. The cabling for ATSC requires a 75 ohm Coaxial
Cable with BNC connectors.
